As some know, I've been working on my '87 XJ to get it running so I can use it as my daily driver. Well, it's not going to well and I'm pretty XJ stupid when it comes to sensors and what-not. This is what I've done so far- new plugs, plug wires, cap, and rotor. It'll fire, run for a couple seconds and then die, it won't idle or anything, just fire, run, and die. Any ideas?

Under the hood, and the driver's side fender well is a small white block with two wires cominbg out of it. This is the ballast resistor which controls current to the fuel pump. Check to make sure the wires and connections are not coroded or dirty. Also check to see if the ballast itself isn't broken (it's made out of ceramic). I would run a jumper wire to test it first. If that doesn't fix it then it might be the CPS (crank shaft position) sensor. This is on the bell housing on the driver's side. A big pain to get to and replace.

yea, if you have a VOM check the resistance across the resistor. I think the value is pretty low. If you get a real high reading it is probly open. The ceramic covers a wire wound resistor inside I think.
Now that Pair8hd mentions that, it rang a bell. I have a 89 FSM. I also have a 89 Renix service manual in PDF format if ya want it.

I'm not real familiar with Jeeps but it does sound like a fuel problem. Maybe not enouf fuel pressure. I'd check for power at the fuel pump and if you have power then maybe see if you have enough pressure at the fuel rail. You prolly don't have a fuel pressure gauge in your tool box but a good cheep place to start would be to pull the fuel filter off and see if you can blow thru it. I've seen them get clooged enouf to cause a no start condition. Some FI sysytems are very fuel pressure sensitive so I hate to say it but you may have a bad pump. If may be pumping fuel just not enouf for the system to work. Just my two cents.

8-)Pair8hd is right, it sounds to me like the relay for the fuel pump. That is exactly what was wrong with mine when I bought it, 1$ later it was running

I thought I had a break-through today while working on the XJ. The ballast resistor was shot so I replaced it, went to start it and still the same deal, fire-run-die so, for no reason whatsoever I held the key in the start position after it fired and it stayed running!! So, I went to Manhappiness and got a new ignition switch and replaced it(there was one connector burnt)and still the same thing! fire, run, die but, if I hold the key in the start position it will stay running, the starter doesn't like it This is starting to get frustrating.

will it keep running if you give it some skinny pedal, or does it die no matter what? If it will, might just be a vacuum leak.
Could try the relay. Here is some info from NAXJA on the 4 relays on the passenger fender. ___________ A bad fuel pump relay can also cause this on a Renix 4.0 On these engines another relay provides power to the fuel pump while cranking and then the fuel pump relay provides the power when the ignition switch is in the RUN position.
This was from a previous post. Front to back 1. Heater 2. Fuel Pump 3. Power Latch Relay ? 4. A/C Clutch ______________
Could try switching 2 and 4 and see what happens

will it keep running if you give it some skinny pedal, yup, it'll stay running, I can mess with the skinny pedal and it seems to run fine, I think I might try changing the relays around and see what happens.

8-)You never know, before long he'll be wheeling an XJ! It'll be awhile before that happens, but it will happen Now that it's running I can put the Frog down for a bit and get some mods done There's some other smaller issues that need to be taken care of on the XJ, but it's nice to have a DD other than the Frog. I drove it and let it run most of the day today letting the battery get a good charge and it didn't overheat so I'm not going to worry about the shroud for now.

Congrats Rob, on getting the XJ running again, now the wife just told me about a "mis" on our ZJ! I get first Dibbs on the old parts off the Scrambler! ;D

Thanks Phil, but I couldn't have done it without the help from the folks here on the boards! I've done very little work on XJ's and got a pretty steep learning curve ahead of me, thanks for everyones help! The collective knowledge of the board just saved me about $3900, a shop that will remain un-named in Manhattan told me it was going to take about $4000 to get the XJ running right With the boards help I got it running great for under $100!
