What gears are in your XJ? The reason I ask is you said tou gad the parts XJ which has either the 2.8 v6 or the I4, i can't rember. Any way either of those should have lower gears than your 4.0 auto or 5-speed, I can't rember which you have either. But I thought that would be a cheap way for you to gear down. Of course you may have already thought of this.

the 85 has 3.73's. It is a 2.5L with selec-trac and has those weird front axles with cv joints instead of the standard ones. Figured I would try to sell the thing complete first, if no good offers just part it out or drop a V8 in it. Got a good olds 403 with THD400 tranny sitting in the shop. No idea how I would ever keep it cool though!

I used to run those cv joints for a long time. But the nice thing is you could take the shafts out of you current one and put them back in the other swap axles and still sell the 85, and you end up with better gears. Mark

Is it worth all the work though to go from 3.55's to 3.73's?? Mabye? The 85 also looks like it has some sort of goofy shafts in the rear with the flange welded to the shaft instead of one piece. Running 30's right now I don't really have much of a gearing problem. I have found a ford 8.8 in the local yard. I think I can get it for 200 bucks. Need to look it over close though might be bent, it took a good hit. Not shure what gears are in it yet.
If they can get a big block chevy in there That olds should be possible. Have to keep my eyes open for a t-case that will go behind a 400 trans. Would be best to go with a passenger side driveshaft since an olds motor has the starter on the drivers side. Sounds like to much work to me. Would be easier to just build a buggy!

Buggy would be easier! When I swaped out my axle assys. I pulled the axles out and moved the brake hardware out of the way and dropped the axle out did the same to the new one and bolted it in. Put the brake hardware back on slid in the good axles, and was done with the rear. total time was about 2 hrs or so. the front is more complicated but you could have both done in a good day. I went from 3.55 gears to 4.1 gears and yes that was most definatly worth it with 31s. I couldn't say with 3.73s or the 30" tires.

Would be a summer project I guess, If I don't find a good 8.8 first. I wan't to get rid of the 35 before I go to any larger tires and save myself the trouble... from what I have read and witnessed so far.
