Trying out the board here! On my 89 the u-joint on the front right axleshaft is making some noise, clicks and clangs a little under a hard load. Looks like it is the facory one on 330K miles! What is involved in replacing this thing. I have not pulled an axleshaft on a disconnect axle, anything different to watch for. Any recomendations on the best quality joint?

Hi Andy! Welcome to the boards! Unfortunately, I can't be much help. My wife has an '87 XJ Pioneer, but I've never had to work on it much. It's her daily driver and doesn't get much trail time. I didn't get to meet you the weekend you were out as I was in Iowa for the holiday's, just wanted to welcome you to the boards!

Pulling the shaft on that side is the same as the other. the outer just slips into the shift collar, and it is tight enough clearance in the housing that it won't come off the fork. As for the hubs, at 330K they may be about welded in with rust. (I'm not kidding when I tell you that you could take the bolts out and drive it around.) Don't mess with the axle nut as it has to be torqued to 175 ft.lb. The best thing I've found is to take the 3 bolts out and the brake caliper off, then put the wheel on loose and shake it around. It worked for me, but mine anly had about 110K. Hope this helps.
Harold BTW if you find the wheel bearings loose or rough, I have a spare for that model.

Andy When I bougth my 87 xj 8 months ago I had to replace the u joints in the front. If you haven't tackled it yet eat your wheaties. I had one side that was welded on by rust and had to turn a wheel around, ( mount it in reverse order) and use a sledge hammer and beat the thing for awhile to get it off. It wore me out. You might use a torch to heat it some to get the rust to break loose. Good luck. My xj has 266 k on it.
