Ok guys, this may sound stupid but I can not find where to hook up a manual temp gauge on my 304. I have a 72 CJ5 and right now it has a electric temp gauge and I want to put in a manual gauge. I have looked and can not find where to put the temp probe on the motor. Everything I have found seems to be to small. Is it on the side of the motor or on the intake?? Someone has to know where this goes, surly Im not the only one to want one of these type of gauges. Any help would be great. Thanks Warrior

Not a jeep fan so I really can't give you an exact location. In most cases people remove the sending unit for the electrical gauge and replace it with the manual gauge probe, in some cases adapters are required to make it fit properly. Wish I could be more exact.

Hey guys, I ended up pulling the plug out of the thermastat housing and putting the probe in there. It seems to work OK. I could not find a spot on the intake to put it and the vacume thing on the housing was not hooked up anyway. I was hoping to get it into the block but I guess this will work also. Again Thanks For the Help Warrior

That will not tell you the temp of the water in the engine if the thermostat sticks shut. Could be a problem.

This thing is driving me nuts, and its a short trip. Does anyone have a pic of a stock 304 2 barrel intake that could show me where to put this thing. I want a good reading and the therm housing was all i could find. Thanks Warrior

found one site talking about putting one next to the oil filler tube by removing a vaccum switch. cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=36474&item=2437504192In the above ebay auction it looks like there in one in the front right side. Look all over on the heads and the sides of the block for a plug screwed in. I am not familiar enough with AMC engines to point you in the exact place. Searched all over the place and just can't find any thing. Andy

Andy, Thanks for doing all the looking for me, thats cool! The port in the intake on the right front is where the electric gauge is plugged in but its a pretty small hole and I didnt have a adapter to go down that small. I am going to Topeka today and see if I can find one that will work. For now I still have the electric one hooked up also along with the mechicanical one. Thanks again for the help Everette
