I am thinking of doing this to my XJ. Cutting out the existing rocker pannel and welding in rectangular tube in in its place. Have been researching on other forums, just wondering if anybody here has been around an XJ that this has been done to and what their impressions were.
My existing rockers are dented and all rusted out.

Wait till I get mine done and you will see. What size tube were you thinking of? There are a coupl of setups done on madxj that were interesting but way more complicated than I think it needs to be.

I would like them to stick out a little past the doors, so maybe 2x6, 3x6 or something like that 3/16 thick is what I was thinking. Was also thinking of running some flat over to the "frame" rails in a few places for more bracing.

This is next on my list. I am going to use 2x6 and tie it into the unibody with some kind of subframe. I also need to replace the floors now. Once that's done, I will have a soild foundation to weld my cage to.

That's what your rig needs...another 200 lbs of steel ;D You could always chop the top off to make up for it!

If my rockers were in good shape to start with I would have built some sliders, deffinately. Mine are so rusty though the sliders would push right through them if i ever came down on something.

I have seen that happen with good rockers. I personally thingk the replacement is the way to go besides 0 ground clearance loss.
