mark, can I take out just the carrier and take the ring off and put on the open carrier on by myself, or is it something that shouldn't be tried by the weekend mechanic??? Do I just need to make sure that I keep the shims on the right sides of the carrier??
Mark doesn't have to answer it, anybody who knows can too. but I figured mark would be the best one, that would know.

I am by far not the best one to answer this question! But Yes you can take the carrier out and pull the ring gear off and reinstall it. But you MUST keep the shims on the right sides and you need to know the torque specs for everything. Also pulling the carrier can be a bit of a PITA if you don't know some tricks.

well, with my luck, I don't think I'm gonna be able to get a drop-in locker without putting in an open carrier, 4x4land will do it all for me, but after all is said and done, I'm lookin at close to $500, which this poor mo' fo' don't have, so as much as I can do myself, I will give a shot.

Changing carriers will require the ring gear be reset as the backlash will probably be different than original.

yeah, that's where 4x4land would come into the picture.

It would be a matter of luck if you changed carrier types and they be the exact same size, to where you don't have to mess with backlash settings. You sometimes get lucky, sometimes it turns into major work.

well, after a LOT of thinkin, I think I'm just gonna buy the No Slip (which is made for a l/s carrier) and be done with it. From what I've heard, they are a very good locker and also very quite. Thanks for all your help guys.

i would strongly recommend the power trax no-slip. That's what i've got in the rear and it has held up awsome. And the install is so easy you think there is now way you can be doing it right.

You cannot change carriers without resetting up the gears. Whats a no- slip run ? I have a trashloc in the front of my HPD44 and would love to have it locked up instead of limited slip. If thats what I think it is its d**n near as much as a Detroit though from what I priced.

its about $450, yeah I noticed the closeness to the Detroit. THe detroits only run about $550, but I don't have the money for the full detroit and to get the gears re-set.
